SHC veteran choir master called to eternal life at 95

KOTA KINABALU – Veteran choir master of the Sacred Heart Cathedral here was called to eternal life on 3 May 2018.  He was 95.

Francis Lee Yit Khee served as choir master of the cathedral from 1960 to 1987.  Aside from being choir master, he also served as parish councillor from the 1970s to the late 1980s as well as reader, offerer, and extraordinary minister of Holy Commumion.

Born on 29 Jan 1923 in Sandakan, Francis was the second eldest child in a brood of five boys and four girls born to Thomas Lee Yen Chiang and Beatrice Ho.  His younger brother is Archbishop Emeritus John Lee while his eldest son is Father Cosmas Lee.

After five years in the Aberdeen Regional Seminary in Hong Kong (1939-1944), he decided that he was not called to the priesthood. He married Francisca Wong in 1947 and they had 13 children: nine boys and four girls (two died shortly after birth).

To feed his growing family, he worked at various jobs – teacher, store assistant, storekeeper, and school canteen operator.

In 1981, when he was 51, he received the papal award “Bene Merenti” from Pope John Paul II for “long and exceptional service to the Church.”

He served as the first Local Minister of the Fraternity of  the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Order of Franciscan Seculars) for 14 years.  The OFS was established in Sabah on 3 Oct 1986.

His wife died on 18 Dec 1980, almost two weeks after meeting with a car accident near Seremban.

Francis is survived by his 11 children, 34 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.

FSICs bid final farewell to Sr Alphonsus on her birth anniversary

The Franciscan Sisters, led by Sr Grace Deosing, sing their song of farewell to the late Sr Alphonsus Low at the Stella Maris Church Tg Aru before her body was brought to the Mile 4.5 Catholic Cemetery Jalan Penampang Lama for burial, 29 Sept 2017.  Near the coffin are the three nieces and one nephew who flew in from Singapore and Perth Sept 28.

TANJUNG ARU – Over 60 Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (FSIC) led by Superior General Sister Grace Deosing bade final farewell to Sister Alphonsus Low, at the Stella Maris Church here on 29 Sept 2017, her 79th birth anniversary.

Singapore-born Low died peacefully on Sept 26 at KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital Likas.  The wake was held at Stella Maris Hostel Tg Aru where she had been taking care of the boarders.

Archbishop John Wong presided at the funeral Mass at the parish church.  Concelebrating with him were Msgr Primus Jouil, Father Johnny Raju, Father Tony Mojiwat, Father Wiandigool Runsab and two Korean priests.

In his homily, Abp Wong paid tribute to the deceased’s lifelong fidelity to her vocation as a religious and as a teacher.  Her first posting in 1958 was at Stella Maris Primary School before she joined the Franciscan Sisters in 1961.  Her last posting was at Stella Maris Secondary School as principal (1981-1989).  After her retirement from teaching,  she took charge of the hostel for students.

Over 300 people turned up for the funeral Mass, among whom were several of her former students.  Three nieces, two nephews, and a nephew-in-law flew in from Perth and Singapore on Sept 28 even though one of the nephews had to leave early on the day of the funeral.

Fr Mojiwat officiated the rite of burial at Mile 4.5 Catholic Cemetery Jalan Penampang Lama.

Thousands gather to bid farewell to the late Fr Fundes

KOTA KINABALU – Thousands of faithful gathered to bid farewell to the late Father Fundes Motiung at the Sacred Heart Cathedral here on 8 Sept 2017.

An estimated 5,000-odd crowd turned up for the funeral of Fr Motiung, many from the different neo-catechumenal way communities in the Kota Kinabalu Archdiocese.

Archbishop John Wong presided at the Requiem Mass.  Joining him were Archbishop Emeritus John Lee and over forty priests from the three arch/dioceses who had just finished their annual retreat in Bundu Tuhan.

In his homily, Abp Wong reminded the faithful that “for the Christian, life has not ended, only changed.”  He stressed on the hope of eternal life held out to all in the Word of God.

Fr Motiung died on Monday, Sept 4, shortly after Abp Wong’s visit.

Hundreds of people – whose lives he had touched throughout his 19 years of priestly service – came to pay their last respects as he lay in state at St Michael Penampang from Monday to Wednesday (Sept 4-6) and at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of the Sacred Heart Cathedral Karamunsing on Thursday (Sept 7).

Out of those 19 years, 16 were filled with pain as he underwent treatment for leukemia.  Yet whenever he was able, he would go about his priestly ministry cheerfully.

He was buried at the Mile 4.5 Catholic Cemetery Jalan Penampang Lama.

Franciscan Sisters bid final farewell to Sr Diana

DONTOZIDON – Over a hundred Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception bade farewell to the late Sister Diana Eing at her funeral Mass on 10 March 2017.

Father Nicholas Stephen presided over the Mass at St Paul Dontozidon.  Concelebrating with him were 11 other priests including Msgr Gilbertus Engan, Father Boniface Kimsin, Father Charles Chiew and Father Benedict Daulis of Keningau Diocese, and Korean priest Father Leo Choi.

Some 1,000 people including many from Kuala Penyu – the deceased had served there in the last six years – turned up for the Mass.

Prior to the Mass, Father Rayner Bisius officiated the reception of the body into the church.

In her address, Superior General Sister Grace Deosing said Sr Diana’s death on March 7 took them by surprise since none of them knew about her sickness.  She read out a prayer written by the deceased asking for grace to accept her sickness.

Sr Grace then thanked everyone for their assistance in one way or another during their bereavement.

After the Mass, the deceased was buried in the Catholic cemetery at Mile 4.5 Jalan Penampang Lama.

1000 faithful join clergy in bidding farewell to Fr Sunny’s mother

PAPAR – About a thousand faithful joined the clergy in bidding farewell to the mother of Father Sunny Chung at St Joseph here on 6 Feb 2017.

Archbishop John Wong presided over the funeral Mass, concelebrated with Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom of Sandakan and 12 priests.

The late Lucy Lian was fatally hit by a motorbike on Feb 3 at about 10 am at Pengalat.

In a speech, Fr Chung thanked  Abp Wong, Bishop Gitom, all the concelebrating priests, and the faithful for their prayerful support and attendance.

Father Chung is currently serving in Sandakan Diocese. – SOCCOM Papar-Limbahau

KK Archdiocese bids farewell to last China-born priest


The priests pay last respects to their senior confrere at the end of Mass, 9 Dec 2016, SHC.

KOTA KINABALU – Kota Kinabalu Archdiocese bade farewell to its last China-born priest at the Sacred Heart Cathedral here on 9 Dec 2016.

Over a thousand faithful joined Archbishop John Wong and over 30 priests in saying farewell to the late Father Aloysius Tung Chien Chee who died Dec 7, aged 90.  With his death, the era of the Chinese missionaries came to an end.

The deceased’s nephew, two nieces and a grandnephew from China were present at the funeral Mass.  Several young priests accompanied the coffin as it moved from the Blessed Sacrament Chapel to the cathedral before the bilingual Mass (Chinese and English) began.

Born in Hubei China in 1926, the deceased was ordained priest on 27 Dec 1953.  Shortly after, he was sent to serve in North Borneo (now Sabah) .  He retired from active ministry in 2009.  He had served the church in Sabah for 63 years.

His remains were buried at the Catholic Cemetery at Mile 4.5 Jalan Penampang Lama.
