Aug 2: St Eusebius of Vercelli (+371) & St Peter Julian Eymard (1811-1868)

eusebiusEusebius was born Sardinia at the beginning of the fourth century.  He was brought up in Rome.  He became a member of the Roman clergy and in 340 he was named first bishop of Vercelli in Piedmont.  He spent much of his episcopate fighting the Arian heresy, which caused him to be exiled for six years by Emperor Constantius. He is thought to have been the first bishop to live together with many of his clergy in community, and his honoured as co-founder of the Augustinian Canons.  He died at Vercelli in 371. – CTS New Daily Roman Missal 2012, p 2872; Christian Prayer 1990, p 1182


peter julianPeter Julian Eymard was born at La Mure Isere France in 1811.  He joined the Marist Fathers.  He dedicated his life to promoting Eucharistic devotion and founded both the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament and the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament.  He died in 1868.  Canonised in 1962, he is known as the “Apostle of the Eucharist.” – CTS New Daily Roman Missal 2012, p 2874
